Windows XP has a majority of computers without a password that can be used to access the hidden administrator account. To access safe mode, press the F8 key right after the first screen (also known as the BIOS Screen). Windows offers a number of options when the F8 button is pressed. Enter the Safe Mode option. Log in to the account called “administrator” to open control panel. Navigate the user account applet to locate the user account with the forgotten passcode. Click “remove Password” to make your account password-free. This function only works if the hidden administrator account does not have a password. This method is only compatible with Windows XP. Windows Vista safe mode cannot access the hidden administrator account.

A number of third-party tools are available to help you reset Windows passwords. My personal favorite is “Active@ Password Changer”. The software locates the registry key that contains passwords and allows you to delete them from any account. Software works on almost every version, both 32-bit/64-bit. You can use it with both Windows and DOS versions. I prefer the Windows version because it has a simple graphical interface. It is also much more user-friendly than the DOS.
